During the Dresden Elbtal Cup everybody’s working together to put together a programme that’s full of football and fun. The Dresder FC takes care of the tournament and between games players can take part in activities and games organized by the Kindervereinigung Dresden. The tournament starts on Friday with the arrival of the teams. During the evening the official team leaders reception is planned while entertainment for the players is provided in the tournament marquee. On Saturday players should get ready for some action because as soon as the official opening ceremony has finished, the first preliminary matches will be played. On Saturday evening teams can enjoy the many attractions of Dresden but for those who do not feel like going into town, an alternative evening with a DJ will be organized. The Dresden Elbtal Cup continues on Sunday with the remaining preliminaries and the finals that will be played in the stadium. The winners will be honoured during the farewell party on Sunday evening that will unfortunately be the end of the Dresden Elbtal Cup.

Dresden (508.000 inhabitants) is the capital city of the German Federal Free State of Saxony. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe. Dresden celebrated its 800th birthday in 2006.

Old Town

The major attraction of Dresden and one of the reasons why ten million tourists visit Dresden each year is the old town. The historical centre of Dresden was completely destroyed in a bombing by allied forces in 1945. However, today the historical centre is largely restored to its former glory. The buildings from the Renaissance, baroque and 19th century have given Dresden its nickname ‘Florence of the North’. Some of Dresden’s most impressive buildings include:

- The Zwinger Palace, a baroque palace featuring many sculptures, a bell pavilion and famous art collections.

- The Semperoper, one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world.

- The Frauenkirche, a church that was completely destroyed during WWII, but was recently reconstructed as a symbol of international reconciliation after World War II. The baroque dome now dominates the city centre once again. A view over the old town and the river Elbe can be enjoyed after climbing the tower.

Neustadt

For those looking for entertainment, the Dresden Neustadt is the place to be. This lively part of the town accounts for most of the trendy pubs, bars and clubs, and the majority of the restaurants in the city. www.dresden.de

Dresden for young people Dresden has a lot to offer for young people. When the weather is good, the banks of the river Elbe are the place to be for a game of football, making music or hanging out with friends. Skaters will probably enjoy visiting Skatepark Dresden, a skate arena of 9.200 square metres at the Lingnerallee.
